Technical Session on

Geometric Numerical Algorithms:
theoretical aspects and applications

The aim of this technical session is to discuss and explain some ideas, methods and techniques used in the field of geometric integration.

Several ordinary and partial differential systems, which occur naturally in many applications, present qualitative and global features which standard methods do not necessarly preserve. Geometrical integration, instead, leads to the development of numerical methods which incorporate qualitative information of the underlying problem into their structure.

These methods designed to reproduce specific properties yield to improvements in computations, preserve additional properties of the solution and can be used as a natural vehicle to solve and interpret different aspects of problems in linear algebra, control theory, etc..

The following areas and related topics are of interest:

  • Conservative one-step and multistep methods;
  • Lie groups methods;
  • Geometrical algorithms for control theory;
  • Geometrical integration of high order differential equations;
  • Numerical methods for oscillatory problems;
  • SVD decomposition and dynamical system;
  • Isospectral problems;
  • Hamiltonian systems;
  • Geometrical approach and its applications in linear algebra.
